Ian's principal musical study has been as a clarinetist. He now works as a freelance musician and teacher, and is on the instrumental teaching staff for Southampton University as Head of Woodwind Performance.  In 2005 he took up an Associate Lectureship in woodwind education at Chichester University College.

An additional interest in conducting has led to opportunities to direct several notable youth orchestras, choirs and amateur symphony orchestras and is now associate conductor of the Southampton Pops Orchestra.  His first venture into musical theatre was in 1991 with a production of “Gigi” for B.B.L.O.C.  Since then Ian has directed for many societies across the South, including areas as far afield as Epsom, Swindon and the South Coast. He has now directed over 40 shows, with many of these achieving N.O.D.A. awards for excellence.  He has also received several regional 'Curtain Call' awards for 'Best Musical Director'.

The shows for which Ian has been musical director include My Fair Lady”, “Me and My Girl”, “Sweet Charity” and most recently “West Side Story” (for BBLOC), "Copocabana", "Sweet Charity", (for Southampton Musical Society) . For Phoenix Theatre (Southampton) he has directed "Dames at Sea", "Love off the Shelf” and "Sugar".  For Theatre 2000, Sondhiem's "Follies", "The World Goes Round" (a tribute to Kander and Ebb) "Mack and Mabel", which gained the Best Musical award, “Gypsy”, “Copocabana”, “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Sweeney Todd”?

His association with BBLOC has been the most continuous of these groups, and for their 50th anniversary celebrations last year he devised and arranged a concert spectacular “The Road to Broadway”. Future plans include the regional premier of “Thoroughly Modern Millie” with BBLOC in May 2007.
